Who is the Perpetrator: An Exploration of Sexual Violence in India

NOVEMBER 17 2020

The webinar attempts to further the conversation on sexual violence and criminal law by (a) exploring what we mean by sexual violence and sexual offence, (b) discussing the cover that punitive approaches provide for evading any self-reflection by society on the causes and repercussions of sexual violence, (c) discussing why people may engage in harmful sexual behaviour, and (d) exploring ways in which the social and individual can perhaps come together through treatment approaches which look at social contexts while still dealing with an individual who may have been sexually violent.

Panelists: Dr. Uma Chakravarti, Historian and Filmmaker; Dr. Shekhar Seshadri, Professor, Dept. of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, NIMHANS, Bengaluru; and Dr. Carol A. Ireland, Director, Dept. of Forensic Psychology, University of Central Lancashire.
